1. You make people happy.
We don't always share with our loved ones how much we appreciate them, and they don't always share it with you either. Think of someone (or a pet) whom you appreciate. Maybe even write/phone/ or tell them in person. Know that you're making people happy even if it's not something they explicitly thank you for.
2. You have time to do things for fun
Leisure is a wonderful thing. You can try out different hobbies. You can surf the internet (like now) and learn about the world or other people. You have free time, and it's a wonderful thing.
3. You're figuring out what you don't want
If there are things right now that worry you, know that they're helping you figure out what you do and don't want. As much as we'd like to skip this step, it really shows you where your heart lies when you worry. It means that you care, and I'd rather be someone who cares (but has worries) than someone who doesn't care.
4. You have internet access
No matter how much we take this for granted, there's a huge number of people who don't have internet and/or who don't have devices to access the internet. You do.
5. You've failed at something
There is a higher calling on your life, and "failure" is your cue that you're not where you need to be. I have had to give up on so many things, but I no longer ascribe some kind of moral failing to my character because of it, that's all ego anyway. I can look back on these times now and realise I was being opened to something else – something better, something greater, something more important.
6. You've got several good friends
This one really sings to me because l know loneliness really affects many of us, and when we're in a low mood, we don't tend to reach out to those who would care and help us out. Think about the people in your world now. If they came to you and were struggling with something in their lives, you'd be with them and listen. Know that they would do the same for you. Reach out to relationships that you'd like to develop more. Send a hello text or invite someone for a cup of tea (your treat).
7. You've picked yourself up after challenges
Presumably you're like the rest of us and nothing thus far has been smooth sailing. Think of your first heartbreak or big disappointment. Oh, how it stung. With a little more time and perspective you were able to redirect your ship and move forwards. Hopefully better things came your way because of being open to new and other opportunities. Each setback is proof that you can become and are resilient. It might not be easy, but every time teaches you more about how you can pick yourself up (both the things that worked and the things that didn't).
8. You're not the same person you were a year ago
Thank goodness for that! May you continue to learn and grow and be someone wiser 12 months from now, too.
9. You add meaning to the lives of those around you
Yes. You do. If you're in doubt of this one, maybe pick one person for whom you could help out a little or brighten the day of. Sometimes the best thing you can do for your mental health is to do something nice for another. It gets you out of your own head more.
10. You're working hard for people and causes you believe in
You're already contributing to making the world a better place. Your path here has been unlike anyone else's and so your perspectives and insights are unique. Keep your perspective on the bigger picture, and keep at it. It's what matters in the end.
11. You haven't let fear get in your way
Life is too short to let fear make big decisions for you. There will be more times when fear pops up in one of its many forms. Learn to recognise it and become a student of its underlying message. But choose to do the right thing anyhow. Choose the difficult thing. If it were the easy path, you wouldn't be walking it now, would you.
